Investigate how Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered pulsars in 1967. Write a short account of this event. (5 lines)

Jocelyn Bell Burnell is an astrophysicist who, as a postgraduate student, discovered the first radio pulsars with her thesis advisor Antony Hewish, for which he won a Nobel Prize. For an account of the discovery of Pulsars please refer to http://www.bigear.org/vol1no1/burnell.htm.  This accoutn was solely made by him after the discovery.

What do you think the Phoenix will find?

I think that the Phoneix will find how to use water on Mars and maybe some form of life in the ice caps. They may also find why Mars is how it is now. Scientist have said that Mars may have been like Earth with life until the climate became hot because of the  Sun that  expanded  and started to  burn Mars.  We may actually prove the theory right or wrong with a new theory or the  same theory.

Do you think as a planet we should be researching other planets? Why/ why not?

We should be researching about planets because we can benefit. If we have aliens they may try to conquer us. We may even benfit in technology and have a better life. Earth is a small planet and if we keep growing like we are now then we will need another planet. Also  Earth  is deriorating  due to the  lack of concern.

Any other comments.

If we learn about Mars then we may actually discover how to save Earth of get a vast amount of claen energy for Earth. Already scientist have discovered that moon rocks on t=our moon, Luna contains H30 with so much clean energy that the one moon rock can supply the whole earth for two years. Ufortunately scientists are still discovering how to fuse the rocks to use the energy.

What contribution did the following scientists make towards the big bang theory?

-         Walter Adams.

-         Ralph Alpher.

-         Robert Dicke

Ralph Alpher

The citation for the award reads “For his unprecedented work in the areas of nucleosynthesis, for the prediction that universe expansion leaves behind background radiation, and for providing the model for the Big Bang theory.” The medal was presented to his son Dr. Victor S. Alpher on July 27, 2007 by President George W. Bush, as his father could not travel to receive the award. Ralph Alpher died following an extended illness on August 12, 2007. He had been in failing health since falling and breaking his hip in February 2007.

I could not find research available for the other two scientists.

THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE

Research and gather information from the internet about the Hubble Space Telescope. Use the following questions as the basis for your journal entry:

-         What was Hubble’s involvement in space research?

Hubble studied the positions of these dark lines within spectrum of light emitted by a star or galaxy and deduced whether they are moving towards or away from us and at what speed. He found out that it was the “Red Shift”. Hubble aslo found out that the distant stars and galaxies were receding from us, and that the further away they were, the faster they were going. This is now known as Hubble’s law.

-         What does the telescope do?

The telescope magnifies objects to an immense scale which allows us to view space clearly.

-         Where can the telescope be found?

It can be found mainly in laboratories and is sold in many shops.

-         What is Hubble’s law?

Hubble’s law is a statement in physical cosmology which states that the redshift in light coming from distant galaxies is proportional to their distance.
